Red-breasted Nuthatch… with a tiny passenger!

RBNU_female-Reifel-2014_12_21

Red-breasted Nuthatch / Sittelle à poitrine rousse / Sitta canadensis (female?): If you look closely enough, you will see that a small insect is getting a free ride on the nuthatch’s bill… I only saw it when I looked at this picture at home on my computer. Taken during the 2014 Christmas Bird Count at the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary, Delta, BC, Canada on December 21 with a handheld Nikon D5200 and AF-S Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED (ISO 1600, 155mm, f/4.8, 1/320). Not baited, called in or set up (but seeds were placed by persons unknown on this tree stump).
