Male Pileated Woodpecker at Pacific Spirit Regional Park

PIWO_male-UBC-2015_02_16

Pileated Woodpecker (male) / Grand pic / Dryocopus pileatus: I have heard these magnificent birds at UBC on a couple of occasions, but never actually seen one until a couple of months ago, when this male was on proud display right in front of me along one of my regular routes around UBC Vancouver and Pacific Spirit Regional Park. I still had to crop this photo quite a bit so that the bird filled a significant portion of the frame. Taken on February 16, 2015, with a handheld Nikon D5200 and AF-S Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED (ISO 800, 300mm, f/11, 1/500). Not baited, called in or set up.
