Common Merganser pair in North Vancouver

Common Mergansers (pair) / Grand harle / Mergus merganser: I was able to get hundreds of photos of these two as they were enjoying a quiet moment on the beach, but the lighting was so challenging that only a few of these shots ended up being acceptable (once again, the main problem is the heavy contrast between the male’s dark green head and immaculately white flanks and breast). The photo below was especially dramatic, as the male was chasing off a crow that was crowding them out.

Taken in the waters next to North Vancouver’s Spirit Trail (Harbourside), with a handheld Nikon D5200 and AF-S Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED. Not baited, called in or set up.

  • Top: ISO 400 | 300mm | f/5.6 | 1/1600
  • Bottom: ISO 400 | 300mm | f/5.6 | 1/1250
